Sustainability Data Engineer (all genders) | carbmee
Intro
This is an infrastructure-and-integration role first, sustainability domain role second, but the two aren't separable here. You'll be the person who decides how a customer's SAP data actually maps into our schema, what happens when a required field is missing, and how a pipeline scales from one pilot customer to twenty enterprise deployments without falling over.
Your tasks
- Design and build the ETL pipelines that ingest customer data: PLM/product data and transactional data - from ERP systems (especially SAP), procurement platforms, and flat files, and transform it into carbmee's data model.
- Own data quality logic: field validation, deduplication, handling missing values, and encoding the judgment calls (e.g., when missing weight data forces a fallback from activity-based to spend-based emissions estimation) that keep a pipeline from silently producing wrong numbers.
- Build and maintain the integrations connecting carbmee EIS™ to customer systems via APIs, custom scripts (Python, SQL), and batch/streaming data pipelines.
- Work with LLM-assisted mapping tools (we use Claude extensively) to accelerate transformation work, while building the guardrails that catch when a model would mismap a column it doesn't have context for.
- Partner with customer IT and data teams directly to understand system architecture and resolve integration blockers.
- Feed recurring data-quality patterns back to carbmee's product and engineering teams so the platform gets smarter with every deployment, not just more scripts.
- Contribute to the internal tooling and templates that let the next Sustainability Data Engineer or Forward Deployed Engineer onboard a new customer faster than you did.
Your profile
Associate: you have relevant experience (internships, working student roles, or 1-2 years full-time) in data engineering, backend development, or a technical consulting environment, with strong fundamentals in Python and SQL and genuine curiosity about the sustainability domain.
Senior: you have a proven track record building and scaling production data pipelines (ideally including ERP integrations - SAP a strong plus) and are comfortable owning architecture decisions with minimal oversight. Prior exposure to carbon accounting, ESG data, or regulatory reporting (CBAM, CSRD) is a strong plus but not required if your data engineering fundamentals are excellent.
- Strong command of Python and SQL; experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and ETL/data pipeline tooling.
- Comfort with genuinely messy, real-world enterprise data, and the skepticism to validate rather than assume it's clean.
- Ability to work directly with customer technical stakeholders, not just internal teams.
- Degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Fluent in English and German.
- Based in Munich.
